Q&A: What did Charles Darwin prove?

چکیده
It is often said that Darwin’s theory of natural selection is unproven True? I don’t think that is a very useful question because Darwin’s strength comes not so much from what he proved, but from the near-inescapable conclusions that he led us to. He used every means of informing himself about questions that interested him. He is known for his massive and continuous correspondence, always asking pertinent questions of those studying what we should now call model systems or model organisms. Of course, he was also a great natural historian himself, so his own observations pervade his writings. He was then able to integrate observations from one species into a prototype for what we now call the comparative method he looked across species and showed how similar environments resulted in the development of similar adaptations. When making crossspecies comparisons it is important to distinguish between similarity through inheritance from a common ancestor and similarity through independent evolutionary origins.

In the August 1881 issue of the New York magazine Science there is a long overlooked article entitled ‘Mr. Darwin on Dr. Hahn’s discovery of fossil organisms in meteorites’. Science was founded the preceding year by journalist John Michels with financial backing of Thomas Edison. Struggling to find a place in the popular science market, the illustrated weekly magazine was only published until M...

Shocked by what he considered to be the savagery he encountered in Tierra del Fuego, Charles Darwin ranked the Fuegians lowest among the human races. An enduring story has it, however, that Darwin was later so impressed by the successes of missionaries there, and by the grandeur they discovered in the native tongue, that he changed his mind. This story has served diverse interests, religious an...

متن کاملWallace, Darwin and Ternate 1858.
Recent debates on the mailing date of Alfred Russel Wallace's 'Ternate essay' to Charles Darwin in the spring of 1858 have ignored certain details that, once taken into account, alter the matter considerably. Here, a closer look is taken at the critical question of whether Wallace's manuscript-accompanying letter represented a reply to the Darwin letter that arrived in Ternate on 9 March; it is...
